Vanessa calls herself “a true junker”. “It’s in my blood. I’ve been doing it since I was 5 years old with my mom, so my heart and soul is vintage.” In her shop they love primitive and vintage western wear, but her true love is paint. “I will only paint pieces that have certain characteristics and a specific look to them. I’m very picky about what I paint.”
Vanessa’s ‘go to’ Junk Gypsy™ Paint color is Wanderlust. She says, “I can’t get enough of that color. My daughter’s room screams wanderlust!”
Vanessa explains her style: “My style is worn — these pieces that we paint are old and have been through so much. When we give them new life, we need to keep in mind where they have been and what they have gone through, so my distressing comes in as hitting only the areas that we know have shown wear. I also think the piece talks to you, so I usually have a vision when seeing it for the first time what I’m going to paint it.”
Vanessa started her business back in 2010. “I was doing it out of my house. It all started when I was pregnant with my first daughter and I wanted black french provincial furniture. I couldn’t find anything like that so I started buying pieces and doing them myself, and next thing you know, friends wanted me to paint for them! I quit my job as a personal executive for big pharma and started doing what I love, which is paint and buy junk. For years we did this from home and selling at flea markets and antique shows and one day, out of the blue, I went in and saw a shop for rent and signed the lease that same day.”
Vanessa has an eye for finding that special piece. Case in point is this lovely dresser, which she painted to look like a serape. Vanessa explains, “The serape piece was something I’ve thought about for awhile. I love serape. Our bedroom is serape meets boho chic. It took me a day to go through colors, blending and mixing to get that look. That piece was supposed to look different. When I finished it, I cried my eyes out because it wasn’t what I wanted. I called my hubby and he’s laughing at me like “you’re nuts, it’s a great piece” but I’m hard on myself when painting and creating. In the end, I ended up loving it. It sold within 1 hour of posting on Facebook!”
Vanessa uses a power sander to distress some edging, but mainly to achieve the look she loves of “dirty”, she uses a sanding block and does it by hand.
Vanessa also gushes about how much she loves Junk Gypsy™ Paint! She says with enthusiasm, “Those colors!!! I love, love, love those bold fun colors!” Junk Gypsy™ Paint is found in 18 bold and beautiful colors.
